This is where I get mine. For some reason just the scent of this amazing incense puts me right into a meditation space.

Yantra Yoga – a Tibetan System

Yantra Yoga by Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche

The new book by Snow Lion Publications, Yantra Yoga: The Tibetan Yoga of Movement
by Tibetan Master Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche, has been released. We now have the opportunity to learn this profound system for spiritual awareness with authorized teachers of the practice.
I’ve been practicing the Nine Breathings of Yantra Yoga for a couple of years. I do it at least once per day. For several months I’ve been practicing the Four Applications breathing practice as well. It is absolutely life changing. Upon receiving personal instruction from a qualified teacher on retreat, I quickly became aware of the potential of the Yantra Yoga physical movements. It is a profound practice. But it is not until now that we have the opportunity to study locally with officially trained teachers under Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche, so we’re really excited to have the book out and these upcoming workshops.

The main difference between this system of Yoga and what we do in Hatha Yoga is that Yantra Yoga is a path to complete spiritual realization. It’s healthy, but it’s not just about health. We can practice it somewhat on our own, but under the auspices of a Dzogchen Master we’re able to really get on a powerful path of realization and transformation. I personally am interested in making this my life practice.

From the official Yantra Yoga website:

Yantra Yoga or the Yoga of Movement is one of the oldest recorded systems of Yoga existing in the world. It is a system of Yoga that has come to us through Tibet, a land full of a vast and rich traditional Buddhist knowledge and wisdom.

Dzogchen Master Chögyal Namkhai Norbu has written an extensive commentary on the root teachings by the great translator Vairocana from the 8th century, Nyida Khajor, the Union of Sun and Moon Yantra, based on his personal training and knowledge of Yantra Yoga received from his uncle and various teachers in Tibet. Chögyal Namkhai Norbu began teaching Yantra Yoga in the beginning of the 70′s in Italy.

For the first time in the West, this marvelous and complete text called A Stainless Mirror of Jewels is being published by Snow Lion Publications.

This uninterrupted lineage of Yantra Yoga is a fundamental method to integrate the profound essence of the Dzogchen Teaching in the three doors (body, voice and mind) of the practitioner. Through positions and movements combined with breathing, one’s energy is coordinated and harmonized so as to let the mind relax and find its authentic balance, which is the basis for contemplation.

In Yantra Yoga there are many positions similar to Hatha Yoga, but the way to assume them differs. In Yantra Yoga a sequence of seven phases of movements connected to seven breathings is used. In particular, in the central phase of the movement the position helps create specific retentions of the breath that work at a subtler and deeper level. For this reason it is not only the main position but the entire movement that is important.

If we are able to harmonize the condition of the prana, or vital energy, we are able to control the condition of our energy and our mind can become really relaxed. This relaxation is more than “letting go” when we are tense. It is the condition of our energy when it is really free from obstacles and flows without restraint.

A part of the text presents the benefits of the various exercises in relation to different modern day problems like: tension, stress, nervousness, depression, eating disorders, uncontrollable emotions, chronic pain or illnesses, rooted in the imbalances of functioning of prana according to Tibetan Medicine. The movements or Yantras coordinate and harmonize all these functions of prana.

Yantra Yoga is a complete spiritual path and an invaluable benefit to daily life. It can be an entry point to the great Dzogchen teachings, a secondary practice aimed at the coordination of our vital energy, and through the transmission of a qualified Dzogchen Master, a method for complete realization. To practice this profound Yoga of Movement, it is indispensable to receive oral instruction from one of the authorized instructors of the Dzogchen Community founded by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu.
